Each year on November 11th, we pause to honor those who served and continue to serve our nation with courage and commitment. Veterans Day, a day rich with history and significance, reminds us of the sacrifices Veterans have made to protect our freedoms.
The Origin of Veterans Day
The roots of Veterans Day date back to World War I. Known initially as “Armistice Day,” this day marked the end of the Great War, with a ceasefire declared on November 11, 1918. A year later, Americans began celebrating this day to recognize the hard-won peace and honor those who had fought ("Veterans Day 2023," History.com).
In 1954, in response to the immense sacrifices made during both World Wars and the Korean War, Congress officially renamed Armistice Day to "Veterans Day" – extending the honor to all Veterans of U.S. Armed Forces. Since then, Veterans Day has been a day to thank all service members, past and present, for their bravery and dedication ("Veterans Day 2023," History.com).
Why We Observe Veterans Day
Veterans Day stands apart from Memorial Day. While Memorial Day is a time to remember those who died in service, Veterans Day honors all Veterans, living and deceased. This day is our chance to express gratitude and recognize the contributions of Veterans from every era, in peacetime and wartime.
Retrieving Freedom’s Commitment to Veterans

As we remember the history of Veterans Day, we also look to the future. Through our mission of “changing lives, one Service Dog at a time,” we are committed to serving Veterans with unwavering dedication.
