Honoring Our Founder and Our Mission: A Tribute to Scott Dewey

Posted on: in [ News ]

On October 3rd, at our annual Shindig for the Dogs: Cedar Valley event, Retrieving Freedom was honored to celebrate one of our co-founders, Scott Dewey, with a commemorative plaque. This tribute symbolizes our appreciation for Scott’s unwavering vision and commitment, which sparked the foundation of Retrieving Freedom and has led us to where we are today.

A Vision Born from a Need

Retrieving Freedom began when Scott recognized a need among Veterans in his community and saw that Service Dogs could be life-changing companions. With a background in training field trial dogs, Scott knew he had the skills—and the determination—to make a difference.

From Vision to Growth: Establishing Our Facilities

As our mission gained momentum, so did the need for a dedicated training space. In 2015, through a community-backed building campaign, our Iowa training center was established to expand our capacity and reach. Today, we operate two facilities—one in Iowa and our headquarters in Sedalia, MO—allowing us to train and place Service Dogs across the United States.

Changing Lives Nationwide

Thanks to Scott’s vision and a growing community of support we’re proud to have a legacy of compassion and impact that started with one man’s dedication to a community need and has since expanded to reach countless individuals and families.
